To celebrate Valentine’s Day, we asked several musicians to tell us about their favorite love songs. Here is what they had to say.
Mat and Savanna Shaw
It’s been almost a year since Mat and Savanna Shaw went viral for their cover of “The Prayer” – a performance they didn’t think would overtake their close friends and family. The father-daughter duo from Utah have since released two albums. Their first single of 2021 – a cover of the classic song “LOVE” – was released on Valentine’s Day.
Carpet
My favorite love song would have to be “Love of My Life” by Jim Brickman. This is the first song I have played and sung for my current wife (thank you lucky stars), Brooke. Considering how it convinced her to look past my many shortcomings and marry me, that should provide sufficient evidence of the power and impact of this song. We sang it again as a duet on our wedding day, so it will always hold a special place in both of our hearts.
Another favorite is “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. It is the story of a different kind of love – a love that has gone beyond the shallows. It sings the story of growing old together and experiencing love in a deeper and more meaningful way along the way.
Savannah
My favorite love song is “Kissing a Girl” by LOCASH. It’s the sweetest song ever, and I think the reason I love it so much is because it goes through the stages of life! It goes from his girlfriend, to his wife, to his daughter. It’s hard not to tear up while listening to it!
National parks
National parks emerged on the music scene in 2013, and the Provo-based band have a big show at Vivint Arena on March 20, according to a press release sent to Deseret News. The group’s last album, “Wildflower”, was released in 2020.
Megan Parks – “Stolen” by Dashboard Confessional
It’s a song that I want to blow up at full blast so I can scream at the top of my lungs. It makes me nostalgic and reminds me of what it’s like to spend the best summer of your life running carefree and wild with the person you fell in love with.
Brady Parks – “I’ll be (500 miles)”, Sleeping At Last version
I grew up hearing the original version of The Proclaimers and always thought it was a light, original 80s pop song. For this reason, I never gave much thought to the lyrics. When I discovered the cover of Sleeping At Last, the song completely changed for me and honestly caught me off guard with the power of a love song.
Just the line “I’d walk 500 miles and walk 500 more just to be the man who falls at your door” really touched me. To me, this represents a love that you would do anything for, and I think that’s why Megan and I chose it as the song for our first dance at our wedding. It’s still pretty funny when you tell people that we danced to the song “I would walk 500 miles”.
Jake shimabukuro
Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro rose to fame in the mid-2000s with his rendition of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, one of the first YouTube videos to go viral. Shimabukuro will be broadcasting a live Valentine’s Day concert at 6:00 p.m. MST on Sunday.
I think one of the greatest love songs of all time is “Something” by the Beatles. And he plays so well on the ukulele, which was George Harrison’s favorite instrument.
I was so blown away the first time I saw Paul McCartney pull out his ukulele and perform “Something” on his world tour, and he dedicated it to George. Such a beautiful song.
Todd Tilghman
Last year on “The Voice”, Todd Tilghman became the oldest winner in the history of the series. Since his victory, the 43-year-old pastor from Mississippi has moved to Nashville, working with a number of people in the music industry to launch a new career. His next single, “In a Heartache”, is released on Valentine’s Day. Tilghman said he has more music on the way and a book will be released in June.
On her favorite love song …
It is actually not easy to choose a favorite love song. I’m going to go with ONE of my favorite love songs. I think for Valentine’s Day I would choose “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds. It’s just such a beautiful tribute (musically and lyrically) to how much the people we love mean to us. It’s kind of a “Broken Road” song. I made a lot of mistakes, but these mistakes got me here.
On his Valentine’s Day single …
It comes out at midnight central time on Valentine’s Day. It’s a song about how love starts out exciting, but it tends to get pretty tough along the way. What if we had to go through everything we’ve been through to get to where we are now, would we?
Jonathan Clay (Revival of Jamestown)
Jamestown Revival, an American / Texan rock band who recorded their debut album in Utah, were scheduled to perform in Salt Lake City on March 17, 2020. Like all musicians, the group’s tour was canceled a few days earlier, at the start of the pandemic. Since then, Jamestown Revival has been writing and recording music at home.
One of my favorites would be “My Favorite Picture of You” by Guy Clark. It’s an honest look at love and the fact that it’s not always roses. The inspiration for this was a Polaroid that Guy’s acquaintances took from his wife Susanna. She gives him a look that I know all too well. The song is a reminder of our most precious gift: time.
Ryan innes
Utah-based singer-songwriter Ryan Innes appeared on NBC’s “Songland” last year, presenting his original song “Long Way Home” to Lady A. Although her song no wasn’t cut by the band, she ended up hitting No 1 on the iTunes charts when Tilghman debuted her on “The Voice.” Innes released a new single, “Creature” a few weeks ago.
It was maybe the very first love song that I ever loved myself. Was obsessed. I sang it all the time. So perfectly sappy and nostalgic and dramatic. That high mark ?! Woooo … love the man.
Jeff Plate (Trans-Siberian Orchestra)
Jeff Plate has been touring as the drummer of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra for two decades. During the pandemic, Plate revived an original songwriting, arrangement and music engineering project for his band Alta Reign, which released an album last month.
“Beth” – Kiss
I was a huge Kiss fan when “Destroyer” came out. This song took me by surprise because it was nothing like “Kiss Alive!” But I really liked the song. And as I got older and music became such an important part of my life, the meaning of the song was even more connected.
“Tears” – Rush
The album “2112” was a game changer for me. I was a young drummer trying to figure it out, and Neil Peart came and showed me the way. Like “Beth”, “Tears” was also a deviation from what you would expect. The lyrics can be interpreted differently, tears of sadness or tears of joy. Anyway, so moving and such a simple beautiful song. It opens your heart.
“Always” – Alta Reign
I wrote these lyrics about lost loved ones. I’ve learned from myself, my wife, and my guitarist Tommy Cook, and the experiences we’ve had with that. They never really left, they are always with you. And that makes the ones we still have physically so much more important.
