Songs have been written about every subject imaginable, but the best – from swooning ’50s ballads to contemporary club bangers – have been written about the ups and downs of love. We count the Top 50 Hot 100 Hits with some form of the word “love” in the title. The romantic tunes span seven decades of Hot 100 history, ranging from Teddy Bears’ 1958 “Knowing Is Loving Him” to Rihanna’s 2011 “We Found Love.” It’s sound proof that while musical fashions and fashions change with each generation, love – and the songs inspired by it – will never go out of style.
Rankings are based on actual performance from the Billboard Hot 100 weekly chart. Songs are ranked based on an inverted point system, with # 1 weeks earning the most value and weeks # 100 earning the least. To ensure a fair representation of the greatest hits from each era, certain time periods have been weighted to account for the difference in turnover rates for those years.
