Canadian singer/songwriter Angela Verbrugge will release a new album, “Love for Connoisseurs,” on March 25.
The 12 songs in “Love for Connoissuers” feature Verbrugge’s original lyrics to new or existing jazz compositions by modern composers. His vision for this project was to create a new vocal jazz repertoire by collaborating with composers who write innovative, yet catchy melodies in the style of classic jazz standards.
Verbrugge listened to thousands of hours of music in jazz clubs and online to find and select those songs that would suit both her storytelling style as a lyricist and singer. She also composed three of her own tunes. Une chanson is an adaptation in French of the title song of his first album. The six composers she has teamed up with are some of the best bebop-oriented jazz musicians on the scene today: New Yorkers Ken Fowser, Nick Hempton, Ray Gallon and Neal Miner and Vancouverites Miles Black and Saul Berson.
Verbrugge’s dream is that these songs can become lasting, modern additions to jazz standard songbooks, and that other singers and instrumentalists will want to perform these pieces. She hopes to hear from listeners that the music and stories of “Love for Connoisseurs” resonate with them.
In 2021, surprisingly as a newcomer, Verbrugge won the JazzTimes Readers’ Poll, for Best Singer (Diana Krall, Cecile McLoren Salvant and Veronica Swift were named runners-up).
She recorded her debut album with a veteran piano trio in New York and released it through Gut String Records in 2019.
The album debuted at No. 1 Jazz on iTunes-Canada.
Verbrugge was one of the youngest graduates of Toronto’s George Brown School of Performing Arts after being active in the arts scene in her hometown of Kingston, Ontario. She moved to Vancouver in 1997 and began spending most of her time in Victoria in 2019. After having three children (now aged 13, 15 and 16) and three brush strokes with death (drowning, accident cancer), she followed her passion for jazz by organizing her own musical education through the mentorship of her bandmates, jam sessions and over the years through Vancouver musicians such as Miles Black, Jennifer Scott, Karin Plato and Kate Hammett-Vaughan.
A lifelong student, Verbrugge took lessons from acclaimed singers and musicians including Karrin Allyson, Sheila Jordan, Rebecca Kilgore, and technique from masters such as Caity Gyorgy, Lisa Popeil, Cecile LaRochelle and Judith Rabinovitch.
She is mainly influenced by traditional jazz, the swing era, vintage musicals and bebop. As a lyricist, her work has received critical acclaim.
She has performed at the Vancouver International Film Festival and many jazz clubs such as Frankie’s Jazz Club, Hermann’s Jazz Club Victoria and Rex Jazz Club in Toronto. She has been a guest performer at clubs including Tula’s in Seattle and New York venues such as Django, Fat Cat, Smalls and Mezzrow. His trios have included such acclaimed musicians as Cameron Brown, Anthony Pinciotti, Neil Swainson, Miles Black, Cory Weeds, Paul Rushka, Julian MacDonough, Ray Gallon, Jesse Cahill, Joe Poole, Bernie Senensky, Terry Clarke and Evan Sherman. His record has received critical acclaim from radio/podcast hosts around the world, with airplay on CBC Saturday Night Jazz, Hot Air, NPR, popular jazz programs in the US, South America, Europe and in Asia, and has been listed on both Earshot and JazzWeek. It was selected by Earshot as one of the top 10 vocal jazz releases of 2019, and Angela’s name appeared in the 2020 JazzTimes Readers’ Poll in the female jazz vocalist category.
