It’s been over a decade since prog/jazz/psych rock masters The Mars Volta released a new album – 2012 Nocturnstile – and embarked on a subsequent tour. So last Thursday’s (Sept. 22) debut show in support of their recently released self-titled LP was highly anticipated, and luckily their setlist included a mix of old favorites and brand new bangers.
The concert took place at The Deep Ellum Factory (in Dallas, TX). Although it’s several hundred miles from the band’s hometown of El Paso, Texas, it’s as close as they’ll come to playing a show in their hometown on their 2022 live tour.
Naturally, they debuted with some songs from the critically acclaimed The Volta of Mars – “graveyard love” and “black light sun” – but the biggest surprise came when they opened with another unreleased track: “Vicarious Atonement” (from 2006 amputation).
You can see a snippet of the song below:

Beyond that, many pieces were performed from their first set of records for the first time in almost – or literally – fifteen years.
For example, their inaugural LP (2003’s Dusted in the Comatorium) has been recognized via classics such as “Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)”, “Televators” and “Drunkship of Lanterns”. Then, highlights such as “L’Via L’Viaquez”, “Cygnus….Vismund Cygnus”, “Viscera Eyes”, and “Empty Vessels Make the Loudest Sound” represented later albums.
Of course, The Mars Volta played the same sequence at the same location last night (September 23). Judging by these first two setlists, it doesn’t look like they’ll be showing any love to either of 2008. The Bedlam in Goliath or 2009 Octahedron.
We’ll just have to wait and see what their next shows bring.
