The hot weather makes wildlife reappear. Nature comes back to life with the sounds of birds, butterflies and long-distance runners.
Nothing helps to pass a multi-hour excursion on a run or hike like a solid playlist, right?
Music can provide a good rhythm for running. Fast-paced rock songs can get your adrenaline pumping like you’re being chased by a dog or a cougar. Most importantly, a long playlist will make the race more enjoyable because who wants to listen to the same twenty songs race after race.
Here are ten songs that will guide you on your way there and back during the short season when the sun is shining and the paths call your name.
Through fire and flames – Dragonforce
Who has time to grasp all the words when a personal best is on the horizon? Dragonforce has the tune for you to make you run like the frantic person that you are.
“Through the Fire and Flames” is seven minutes of fast guitar solos and lyrics that can pass you by in a flash.
Are there better racing lyrics than “Fighting hard, fight on for the steel / Through the Wastelands evermore”?
May be. There’s this adrenaline pump: “Lost inside you’ll never find it / Lost in my own mind / Day after day this misery has to go on.”
Thunder – Imagine dragons
Do you dream of bigger things? Do you want to leave your old life behind?
Let go, relax and be the lightning. Hit the air and put the bass deep in this modern ode to being your best.
Barracuda – Heart
This hard rock song became the band’s signature song. While the sun is smiling at you, go burn, burn, burn those calories.
There is a famous origin story behind this song. It was written in anger at his record company for allegedly spreading scandalous false rumors about singer and writer Ann Wilson.
Let motivating anger wash over you as you pound the curb during your weekend run.
Immortals – Fall Out Boy
Are you hitting the pavement for better health? As Fall Out Boy puts it, “They say we are what we are /
But we don’t have to be.
As you propel yourself over these endless hills, you are immortal. Not for a long time. No slope can beat a person who, for a brief moment, is unbeatable.
Kickstart My Heart – Mötley Crüe
It’s a song with a very Mötley Crüe sound and Mötley Crüe-esque lyrics. Give your heart a fiery take off with a pounding beat.
Feel the adrenaline rush through your veins. Stay outside and hope it never ends.
Twisted Sister – We Won’t Take It
“It’s our life, it’s our song.”
“We are right / We are free / We will fight / You will see”
And we are not going to take it anymore.
Hold For A Hero – Bonnie Tyler
You are your own hero. You are fast. You are strong. And you are larger than life.
The quintessential ’80s song for hard-hitting exercise montages (apologies for “Eye of the Tiger”).
Made famous thanks to the Footloose soundtrack, this song is sure to motivate marathon runners.
Highway to Hell – AC / DC
Take it all in stride. It’s party time.
No one is going to slow you down. ‘Nuff said.
Oh yeah – Subways
The contagious and uplifting rock of The Subways will have you “touching the ground with all might, it makes no sense or sound”.
You have the whole world and you are on your way. And you will get there one way or another.
Over the Hills and Far Away – Gary Moore
If you are unfamiliar with this rock song with an Irish heritage, consider yourself lucky. You have the privilege of hearing this beautiful work for the first time. If you know this song courtesy of Nightwish, the Finnish symphonic metal band, you now know that there is an original.
Bonus Tracks: Nightwish has put together a number of covers and originals that may fulfill a hunger for new work to get you started on the racetrack.
Forward, valiant runners! Wearing running shoes, armed with a music playlist and a water bottle, you will conquer your race!
