“XO…do I ever miss you” is the very first line of one of the most anticipated pop albums of the year, and the collective response is: OFC WE MISSED YOU, FLETCHER! Since her last project THE S(EX) TAPES was released just a few years ago, the release of New Jersey’s Cari Fletcher’s debut album, Girl Of My Dreams, has been long overdue, generating a level of expectation difficult to satisfy. Fortunately, FLETCHER delivered. And that would be an understatement to stop there… she fed her fans, she fed her fans, and most importantly, she gave her fans things they didn’t even know they needed.

The vibrating and incredibly effervescent record is charged with sensations from top to bottom, each track triggering a new emotion. Bittersweet revenge, evolution, growth, self-love and more are the topics Cari covers throughout the album with a beautiful sonically unifying thread that includes soaring vocals, guitars pop-punk, mystical synths and selective electronic accents. While we more than thoroughly appreciate this new taste of FLETCHER, we can’t help but wonder if this was the album that was originally slated for debut.

As most of her die-hard fans will recall, she had been confirmed to have an album pretty much ready to release just before the pandemic, but instead decided to go with THE S(EX) TAPES as the world stopped. We asked her if Girl Of My Dreams was THAT album or if she made some changes along the way, to which she replied that “a couple [of] the songs from THE S(EX) TAPES were intended for the first album, as well as some [of] songs that are on Girl Of My Dreams”.

She keeps. “Unfortunately most of that record was thrown away, because I walked out of what I wanted to say at that exact moment. The world stopped, the world changed, I evolved in so many different ways. ‘Forever’ was going to be on this album, and I’m really glad I walked away from that sonic and creative direction. It doesn’t sound like the artist I am or want to be. However, I like ‘Forever’ (Stripped)” and the rock version of “Forever” that I play on the road. It sounds like two very authentic sides to FLETCHER.”

There’s a lot to be said for the vulnerability of this album – and the brilliant lyricism that is equally impressive. We wanted to know if the process of writing such personal lyrics was difficult. “I’m an oversharer,” she tells us, “and there’s about three or four songs on that album that I didn’t know if I should release. But at the end of the day, I’m still gonna wear my heart out. my sleeve and giving all sides of my story and all sides of me I’ve never been one to edit my story.

Along the same lines, we were curious about which songs could have wreaked havoc, which were the hardest to do, and which were the most enjoyable. “I was at a very low point when I wrote ‘For Cari’, but it’s my favorite song on this record. ‘Better Version’ is also one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. It was really fun writing and recording “Serial Heartbreaker” with my good friend Jenn Decilveo. It was also a crazy experience being in the room with Marshmello, Michael Pollack, Madison Love and J Kash for ‘Conversations: talk about hitmakers! I can’t wait to play these songs live, especially in stadiums next year in the UK and Europe.”

It’s really no surprise that these songs are the hardest hitting both ways, however, there’s a BIG elephant in the room on this album – and no, we’re not talking about the vintage red corvette t-shirt . Instead, we’re referring to how FLETCHER samples himself on track number two ‘Guess We Lied…’. “‘If You’re Gonna Lie’ to me is one of the most special songs in my catalog…and I love hearing the lyrics screaming at me at my gigs. I loved the idea of honoring that record, to celebrate the fans who have been with me from the beginning and breathe new life into it with a fresh perspective. The original song was written about a toxic and bad relationship for me and “Guess We Lied” is obviously written about a relationship that was just the opposite When you think your heart will return to someone but realize you may have both lied…and that may not be an end to the relationship anymore. story.

FLETCHER also played on the live side, although we didn’t have many songs from the new album on the last tour. It wasn’t until the end that we got a live preview of ‘Becky’s So Hot’. She is currently preparing to hit the road again, this time with a big part of Girl Of My Dreams. “There’s nothing like being on tour. Worth it. It is especially rewarding to meet so many people around the world who see their stories in mine, and themselves in me. I never set out to be a role model, but I am deeply touched by those who allow my words to mean something. I am then happy to play this new album live… I’m putting together the set list. I really want to leave a surprise for those who will be on the Girl Of My Dreams tour…but I can say with confidence that they will hear ‘Becky’s So Hot’ and ‘Better Version'”, she told us.

Banger after banger, this album not only provided a great topic of conversation for WLW due to the fiery nature of the songs, but it also opened the door to many discussions about past relationships and self-acceptance. Having intentionally or unintentionally started drama with his ex by @-ing Becky, FLETCHER managed to unlock a whole new section of the internet (specifically TIkTok) that sounds like “Keeping Up With The Lesbians.” If you’re a fan of this album, your FYP is almost certain to be full of people trying to unravel celebrity relationships and the “Becky’s So Hot” soundtrack. On this subject, Cari tells us that “Sapphics deserve both anthems of rupture and songs of love. But the internet is totally crazy, and the effect that song had gave L Word all the energy. I’d be lying if I didn’t reveal that it’s actually all over my TikTok FYP and Twitter timeline. I take full responsibility for the “lesbian breakup curse”.

It’s more than important to point out what Cari said at the outset that this album was completely different from what the originally conceived debut album was supposed to be. She came out of the last album and instead went through a journey of self-acceptance as she faced her demons, coming out the other side being the best version of herself. While it’s pretty clear that some songs hold a very special place in her heart, FLETCHER commented that ultimately, putting all the drama aside, she really wants fans to focus on the main message. of recording. “I hope the fans really claim ‘I Love You, Bitch’, ‘For Cari’ and ‘Girl Of My Dreams’. I think you know why. We should all shamelessly love each other until the day we die .

Even though this album is designed to give fans the satisfaction of identifying with the songs, it’s important enough to also acknowledge the idea of a queer female artist who identifies, not with her sexuality or self-expression, but with his general feelings. for herself outside of a relationship. The level of vulnerability is certainly fun and compelling, especially in tracks like “I Love You, Bitch”. We asked how hard it was to say ILYB to the mirror to which she replied, “It’s never easy, but I’m really proud of the healing journey I’ve been on over the past few years to get to the point of love who I am Travel can be ugly and beautiful at the same time, and it will be different for everyone.

Regardless of your thoughts on controversial relationships, Girl Of My Dreams is, objectively, brilliant pop. It tapped into a currently highly relevant palette of the zeitgeist that allows people to connect with their feelings via a revival of pop-punk – without it being just another angsty pose album. With a bit of FLETCHER magic, the record manages to stand out and stand apart from the trend-hopping sonic replicators… while expanding Cari’s universe in ways fans have come to expect.

Although we’re months away, it’s almost certain that FLETCHER will be on tour (hopefully in the UK where that fellow Pisces can go see her) on “March 18th at 11:59” and if we can sing Happy Birthday to her in no one or no, she can rest assured that we will all be thinking of her and thanking the universe for bringing her into existence so that she can share Girl Of My Dreams with all of us.

Girl Of My Dreams is now available.
