A native of the Bronx, Capella Gray, dropped out of “GYALIS” in January 2021 after starting his music career a year earlier. The track exploded into a summer hit, probably thanks to New Yorkers on TikTok, and has since been remixed with Chris Brown and Popcaan.
PinkPantheress – “Break it”
PinkPantheress ‘”Break It Off” is a personal favorite, but frankly, all of PinkPantheress’ 2021 discography has exploded on TikTok this year. THE ANXIETY, a music duo of WILLOW and Tyler Cole, dropped the song with their eponymous alternative album in March 2020, and the song’s popularity has hardly declined. The creators deposit the song on inspirational style videos, romantic montages and skits. WILLOW dropped his fifth project, “Lately I Feel EVERYTHING”, this summer, which also made waves on TikTok with “transparentsoul (feat. Travis Barker)”.
Guapo – “Mr. Put it”
Guapo’s whisper bars are reminiscent of the Ying Yang Twins on his 2021 hit, “Mr. Put It On.” Trailblazing fashionistas and style gurus at TikTok have used the song on clothing transport videos, compilations of their favorite cuts, and makeup artists remix using the runway for tutorials. “Mister. The king of “premieres,” Soulja Boy, may not have been the first rapper to name a song after a cartoon, but he could very well have been the most successful. TikTok hosted the song’s success, and much of Soulja’s recent comeback, and “Rick & Morty” channeled the Bay Area dance, the smeeze, to phone screens across the country. Creators challenging family, friends and colleagues to try viral dancing often do so on the eye-catching runway, which was scrapped in June. It’s been a prolific year for the Atlanta rapper, who released five albums in 2021 alone.
