The early 2000s was a pivotal period in the history of Nigerian music. The decade saw the rise of many stars and legends, the production of classic albums and a plethora of evergreen songs – all of which laid the foundation for Nigerian music as we know it.
For many of us, this era (2000-2009) seems to belong to yesterday. So hard to believe that some of our favorite Naija classics are almost 18 years old! That means we’ve been singing these iconic songs for nearly two decades. So as Nigerians prepare to vote in the upcoming elections, here are 6 classic Nigerian hits that will soon be old enough to join us at the polls:
P-Square – Bizzy Body (2005)
At the very top of the list is P-Square’s legendary hit single, weird body from the duo’s second studio album Square yourself up which consisted of 13 firing tracks. Featuring the talented Nigerian singer, Waje, whose sweet voice added a special touch to the song, weird body made young and old dance and can still drive a crowd of music lovers crazy today!
Lagbaja – Away (2005)
Still good enough to send tingles up your spine, this beautiful love song has certainly stood the test of time. Featured on his 2005 album, African, Far combines the groovy and distinctly African sound of Lagbaja with rich classical music, all tied together by the memorable voice of Ego Ihenacho. Although more than a decade and a half has passed, this song never gets old.
Ego – Djinee (2005/6)
Now, here’s a song that had many of us in a strangle hold (and maybe even on the verge of tears) at the time. The single Afro-RnB masterpiece, Ego was produced by Cobhams Asuquo and quickly became one of Djinee’s most popular and beloved songs. From the singer’s unique and soulful voice to the heartfelt lyrics that are perfect for singing along, there’s no doubt that this song is a certified classic.
Styl Plus – Olufunmi (2005)
If we are talking about Nigerian classics, this song hardly needs an introduction! Often hailed as one of the most requested love songs by major Nigerian R&B radio stations between 2004 and 2005, the song is one of many evergreen songs the band gave back to us in their heyday. Looking at how people always sing along with passion whenever the song comes out, it’s hard to believe that nearly 18 years have passed since it was first released.
D’banj (2005)
Tongolo, I ka Tongolo
Omoge wa je a tongolo
Tongolo, she did the tongolo
Omoge wabi makes me tongolo
After being released as the lead single from his debut studio album “No Long Thing”, Tongolo was one of the songs that thrust D’banj into the spotlight as a solo artist (and the only male with a degree in feminology!).
Produced by Don Jazzy, who also featured on the track, the song’s music video won Best Newcomer at the 2006 Channel O Music Video Awards and is still considered a template for many music videos today.
Danfo Driver – Mad Melon ft Black Mountain (2006)
We cannot talk about the history of the Nigerian music industry or Nigerian classics without mentioning the massive impact of Ajegunle artists such as Mad Melon and Mountain Black who dominated the music scene with street anthems popular as Danfo driver. The song spread like wildfire in its day, and even now, almost 18 years later, it still has the power to get you out of your seat and kicking your feet every time you hear that intro. unmistakable.
