A song my kids won’t hear because I can’t hear it. I don’t want to have to tell them what an asshole is and that no, even though daddy says it, A-hole isn’t exactly a pretty name to call your teacher! John Mark Nelson, Tancred and Jenny Owen Youngs collaborated on a pair of holiday songs, a rendition of the classic “Silver Bells” and an original song, “Fireside”. “Jess, John Mark and I got together to make two holiday recordings,” says Youngs, “inspired in large part by an arrangement of“ Silver Bells ”Jess had proposed last Christmas. She reversed the chords in the final chorus for that the chorus wrapped around itself, tilted minor, in a way that made the song gloomy without feeling sad. We decided to accompany this version of Silver Bells with an original holiday song about a territory similar emotional: cheerful, yet contemplative; secular, yet respectful. What we found as we wrote ‘Fireside’ together was a crisp tribute to inner ruminating in December, and staying warm with loved ones when the light of day is brief and winter nights are long. “
